Silty shale

The Flower-pot Shale was named by Cragin (1896, p. 24) from Flower-pot Mound, a butte in Barber County, Kansas. It is composed of about 180 ft. (55 m) of gypsiferous shale and silty shale, with a few thin beds of sandstone and siltstone (Swineford, 1955).

Silty shale. clastic sedimentary rocks with predominance of silt and clay as the detrital components (Krumbein and Sloss, 1963). They are formed from silts and clays that have been deposited and compacted or hardened into rocks. On the basis of texture therefore, the most common types of shales are silty shale (silt dominant) and clay shale (clay dominant).

Aug 22, 2023 · It consists of silt, hence siltstone, sandy beaches and water adjacent to deltas. Declining currents filter sand from smaller silt particles. Siltstone rises to the shale level in deep water; where the suspended clay particles are stored further as the currents continue to lose energy.

On the basis of texture therefore, the most common types of shales are silty shale (silt dominant) and clay shale (clay dominant). Siltstone is a clastic sedimentary rock made from fine grains (1/16 to 1/4 mm), too small to be seen with the naked eye. These silt-sized particles (usually quartz) are bound together by cement. Siltstone forms in low-energy marine environments, and is an intermediate rock type between mudstone and sandstone.Sep 17, 2021 · The lacustrine shale in the Dongyuemiao Member of the Fuling area, Sichuan Basin, is widely distributed and has huge shale oil resource potential.
